CBD Oil for Stress Relief?

It’s no secret that for most people, life today can be rather daunting. With societal pressures and emphasis placed on maintaining busy schedules, it's obvious that most of us are stressed. There are many sources of stress: money, the economy, relationships, grief, marriage, job stability, health concerns, and more. Interestingly, the Center for Disease Control (CDC)/National Institute on Occupational Safety & Health (NIH) reported that the number one cause of life stress is the workplace.

Why does this matter? Well, there exists tons of research that directly illustrates the emotional and physical toll that stress has on a person. For example, the American Psychological Association reported that people experienced irritability or anger, fatigue, a lack of interest, motivation or energy, headaches, or upset stomachs all due to stress. Even more important, perhaps, is that individuals typically engage in unhealthy behaviors, like overeating or not sleeping, when stressed.

Why is Managing My Stress Important?

Short, infrequent bouts of stress poses little risk on one’s health. However, on-going, unresolved feelings of tension can cause severe threats to one’s overall wellbeing. This is because when you experience feelings of pressure, the body reacts by maintaining a consistent state of activation. Stress sets off a signal in the brain, which then responds by prepping the body to take a defensive action. This response is commonly known as the flight or fight response. It is extremely vital because it prepares us to defend against any threatening occurrences. Our bodies respond by signaling the nervous system, quickening the pulse, tensing muscles and deepening breaths.

When stressful events go unsettled, the body is then kept in a continuous state of activation. Over time, this can cause a lot of wear and tear on the body. Thus, the ability for the body to fight against disease can become exceedingly compromised. As a result, the risk of injury or illness skyrockets.

A persistent strain on one’s body from habitual stress is quite challenging to detect. But, it can definitely lead to many pressing health ailments. Specifically, chronic stress has been found as a predecessor to the six leading causes of death: heart disease, lung conditions, incidents, cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and suicide. With this in mind, it’s clear how important it is to actively manage chronic stress. This is because it's essential to make sure your body is functioning appropriately. Can CBD Oil for stress relief become an avenue for dealing with this rising daily problem?

Does CBD Oil provide for Anxiety Relief?

Medical News Today and many other prominent medical publications have touted that CBD oil can help anxiety.  But is that an indication for the medical community to move forward on recommending CBD for anxiety relief?

Much of the research that exists on cannabis products has looked primarily at marijuana-derived cannabis and its negative effects on the body rather than the use of hemp-derived CBD oil.

Cannabidiol — better known as CBD — is a chemical compound called a cannabinoid that bind to specific receptors in the brain. Cannabinoids specifically bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. In addition, Cannabidiol or CBD binds to Serotonin receptors and Adenosine receptors.

The most active cannabinoid on the CB1 receptor is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects. The troubling problem with THC is that this cannabinoid is known to stimulate the CB1 receptor creating a downregulation of the neurotransmitters like GABA and Glutamate. Too much downregulation of GABA means that the neurotransmitter is not producing enough. When GABA doesn’t produce enough, feelings of anxiety and paranoia can occur.

THC, however, is only one of over 100 cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (or CBD), on the other hand, does not stimulate or activate the CB1 receptor; therefore, using CBD oil does not block the GABA neurotransmitters that may lead to stress or anxiety. Rather, advocates argue that CBD oil for stress relief has multiple health benefits, because of its interaction with the our biological balancing system, the endocannabinoid system.

The medical scientific community has still not accepted the use of CBD oil to manage anxiety, so it would be rare that a physician would recommend CBD oil, no matter if it were hemp-derived or marijuana-derived.

Preliminary studies on have found positive results on managing anxiety with CBD oil particularly related to the anxiolytic effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in generalized social anxiety disorder. This particular study was performed on humans through neuroimaging. The study found that CBD oil reduced anxiety in those with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants’ brain scans showed alterations in blood flow to the regions of the brain that are most associated with feelings of anxiety.

The researchers found that the positive effects were experienced because of the effects of CBD oil on the limbic and paralimbic areas of the brain. However, it is important to highlight that these findings were preliminary and no medical clinical trials have been conducted.

In addition, researchers published a study in 2014 analyzing the antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects of cannabidiol. They performed a variety of tests on animal models and found that CBD exhibited both anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. Again, it is important to remember that these studies were performed on rodents, not humans and while the rodents have similar biological functions as humans, it does not mean the research carries over to the effects on humans.

Beyond the above research, in 2015 researchers published a pre-review on cannabidiol as a potentially effective treatment for anxiety disorders. After assessing evidence from various existing studies, they found strong support for the notion that CBD oil can be an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. But agreed that further clinical trials on large populations needed to be performed in order to provide substantial evidence to support the research.

Does CBD Actually Help Relieve Stress?

Given the above research and due to FDA regulations we cannot say whether CBD oil is an effective treatment for anxiety. It appears that the scientific community agrees that more research is needed in order to understand the effects of cannabinoids like CBD against anxiety-like behavior.

Conversely, if you are feeling stressed out in your day to day life, balancing your endocannabinoid system with CBD oil may be the ticket you need to manage sporadic stress and even daily stress. The question remains is what CBD oil is best for stress relief?
