The most active cannabinoid on the CB1 receptor is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects. Too much downregulation of GABA means that the neurotransmitter is not producing enough. When GABA doesn’t produce enough, feelings of anxiety and paranoia can occur.
THC, however, is only one of over 100 cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (or CBD), on the other hand, does not stimulate or activate the CB1 receptor; therefore, using CBD oil does not block the GABA neurotransmitters that may lead to stress or anxiety. Rather, advocates argue that CBD oil for stress relief has multiple health benefits, because of its interaction with the our biological balancing system, the endocannabinoid system.
The medical scientific community has still not accepted the use of CBD oil to manage anxiety, so it would be rare that a physician would recommend CBD oil, no matter if it were hemp-derived or marijuana-derived.
Preliminary studies on have found positive results on managing anxiety with CBD oil particularly related to the anxiolytic effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in generalized social anxiety disorder. This particular study was performed on humans through neuroimaging. The study found that CBD oil reduced anxiety in those with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD). Participants’ brain scans showed alterations in blood flow to the regions of the brain that are most associated with feelings of anxiety.
The researchers found that the positive effects were experienced because of the effects of CBD oil on the limbic and paralimbic areas of the brain. However, it is important to highlight that these findings were preliminary and no medical clinical trials have been conducted.
In addition, researchers published a study in 2014 analyzing the antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects of cannabidiol. They performed a variety of tests on animal models and found that CBD exhibited both anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. Again, it is important to remember that these studies were performed on rodents, not humans and while the rodents have similar biological functions as humans, it does not mean the research carries over to the effects on humans.
Beyond the above research, in 2015 researchers published a pre-review on cannabidiol as a potentially effective treatment for anxiety disorders. After assessing evidence from various existing studies, they found strong support for the notion that CBD oil can be an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. But agreed that further clinical trials on large populations needed to be performed in order to provide substantial evidence to support the research.
Does CBD Actually Help Relieve Stress?
Given the above research and due to FDA regulations we cannot say whether CBD oil is an effective treatment for anxiety. It appears that the scientific community agrees that more research is needed in order to understand the effects of cannabinoids like CBD against anxiety-like behavior.
