What is the Difference Between Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC?

Most everyone is familiar with marijuana and THC. When people talk about THC, they are most often referring to Delta 9 THC, the potent psychoactive cannabinoid found abundantly in marijuana responsible for the classic psychoactive marijuana high.

However, Delta 9 THC is not the only THC out there. There are different forms of THC besides Delta 9 THC. For example, THCP is cannabinoid similar to Delta 9 THC, but almost 30x as potent. So, what is Delta 8 THC? And what is the difference between Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC?

Delta 8 THC: Similar to Delta 9 THC but Slightly Different

Delta 8 THC is an analogue of Delta 9 THC. This means Delta 8 THC has a similar molecular structure to Delta 9 THC, but has slight differences. This similarity in structure means that Delta 8 shares some of the same psychoactive and medicinal effects of Delta 9 THC, but due to some slight differences in chemical make up Delta 8 THC produces slightly different effects and interacts with the Endocannabinoid system in its own unique way.

Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC are both psychoactive, but Delta 8 THC appears to offer a more clear minded psychoactive effect with less anxiety. Research suggests Delta 8 THC may have less psychoactive potency than Delta 9 THC. Delta 8 THC binds easily to the CB1 receptors in the Endocannabinoid System similar to the way Delta 9 THC binds to the CB1 receptors. Delta 8 THC has also been shown to effectively bind to the CB2 receptor.

Where Does Delta 8 THC Come From?

Delta 8 THC is found in small amounts in the cannabis plant (think fractions of a percent). So, this minor cannabinoid that is not produced in large amounts, and must be distilled using thin film distillation and other methods to fraction off and isolate the molecule for formulation.

Delta 8 THC - In Conclusion

The unique characteristics of Delta 8 THC and the similarities to the well-researched Delta 9 THC make Delta 8 THC a very interesting and promising cannabinoid for researchers. There also appears to be a decent amount of interest and demand for this cannabinoid from consumers looking for clear-headed psychoactive THC effects without anxiety. Delta 8 THC is relatively new to most people still, but it is safe to say this cannabinoid isn’t going anywhere and we can expect to continue to hear about it and see it more often. We are excited to keep learning about the benefits of Delta 8 THC and its potential for recreational and medicinal use.
