Can I Fly With CBD Oil?

The summer season is upon us, and you know what that means – hello vacation!

Many folks use CBD on a regular basis for our daily health needs. But we still have places to be, begging the question: Can I fly with CBD oil?

Flying with CBD Oil and TSA

This past weekend, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) revised their “What Can I Bring?” section regarding medical marijuana. Previously, TSA did not allow medical marijuana on flights. Now, their website reads “yes” (with ‘special instructions’), a designation that includes flying with CBD oil.

I know what you’re thinking – flying with CBD oil is different than flying with medical marijuana. You’re right. Previously, TSA did not make a distinction between hemp-derived and marijuana-derived CBD products. But there is an important distinction between the two:

  • Hemp-derived CBD oil:
    • Contains less than 0.3% THC
    • Not classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance
    • Federally legalized via 2018 Farm Bill
  • Marijuana-derived CBD oil:
    • Contains more than 0.3% THC
    • Classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance
    • Not federally legalized for either medical or recreational use

Under their new ‘special instructions’, however, TSA is finally recognizing this difference. If you’re flying with CBD oil that is hemp-derived, you’re good to go!

But if you’re flying with CBD oil that is marijuana-derived, there is a risk of getting in legal trouble – even if medical marijuana is legal in your state.

Enforcing the New CBD Standard with TSA

Now that there is a TSA approved CBD oil, how will TSA agents go about enforcing it? Will they be trained in distinguishing between hemp-derived and marijuana-derived CBD?

That’s a question we can’t answer. Though TSA claims that flying with CBD oil from hemp is legal to fly with, there is no actual procedure in place for them to be confident that the product in your carry-on is TSA approved CBD oil.

Yet when talking cannabis, the TSA isn’t actively seeking out marijuana products. On their webpage, TSA claims that their focus is on security and threats regarding carrying illicit products. Essentially, they aren’t there to confiscate cannabis just for the hell of it.

But in no way are we advocating for flying with CBD that is marijuana-derived – we’re actually doing the opposite. TSA goes on to explain how if they discover an illegal substance in your belongings, they have to report it to local law enforcement.

The takeaway? When flying with CBD oil, stick to hemp-derived products. They’re federally legal, TSA approved, and won’t make you step aside for further inspection and potentially late for your plane.

Flying Abroad with CBD Oil

Jetting off to a tropical island? Exploring ancient ruins? Unfortunately, we don’t advise bringing your CBD along abroad – even if it’s hemp-derived. That’s right, flying with CBD oil outside of the United States can get tricky.

In some parts of the world, CBD and THC are not legal. Countries in the Middle East and in Asia, in particular, are known to have strict laws against possessing these products.

In the United Arab Emirates, if you’re caught with a CBD product containing mere traces of THC (below 0.3%), you can be imprisoned for up to four years.

Our suggestion? Leave your CBD at home. Don’t want to? Do extensive research on the laws of the country you’re traveling to and if flying with CBD oil is legal. This applies not only to your destination, but any layovers as well.

Best Tips for Traveling with CBD

But that doesn’t mean that flying with CBD oil, even if its hemp-derived, is as simple as flying with perfume, toothpaste, or shaving cream. Here are some tips for CBD air travelers when preparing for their flight:

  1. What kind of CBD product are you bringing?
  • Flying with CBD tinctures, lotions, or sprays? Liquids, including CBD oils, must follow the TSA container volume rule of 3.4oz or less.
  • Remember to store these in a quart-sized, clear bag, as well! Read more about these TSA rules HERE.
  • Labels are not the truth!
  • The label might read “hemp-derived” or “THC-free”, but that doesn’t mean the lab results do! Review your product’s lab report to make sure what you’re traveling with is legal.
  • In the chance TSA does inquire about your CBD oil, you’ll have the tools to properly explain its legality. Remember, a product with over 0.3% THC is not TSA approved CBD oil and is illegal.
  • Your new plane buddy.
  • CBD oil products must be handled with care. Keep them in your carry-on or personal item – no one wants cracked or broken CBD!
  • Before packing, be sure to double check the lid to your CBD. It should be tightly sealed to prevent any spillage.

Remember – flying with CBD oil that is hemp-derived is perfectly safe and legal. These tips are to help ensure smooth sailing through the security checkpoint line and beyond in your air travels!

Flying with CBD Oil – Your First-Class Ticket to Balance

Long lines? Missed connections? Turbulence? Heights? Just a few aspects of air travel that can be stress-inducing and anxiety-provoking. CBD may be able to help you cope with that!

Simply put, your body has an endocannabinoid system – a fancy phrase for your body’s balancing structure – found in our brains. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a particular compound that binds to certain receptors in our endocannabinoid system.

More specifically, CBD binds to adenosine and serotonin receptors – two neurotransmitters responsible for our sleep and general mood. Because of this, CBD may promote a more stable and calm mood as it works to balance out our endocannabinoid system.

Science aside, we can’t tell you definitively if CBD is an effective solution for anxiety and stress. Why? Because it’s not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But that doesn’t mean it can’t work for you and your air travel needs!
