Meet Annie Rouse

"Life is too important to be taken seriously."
- Oscar Wilde

Hemp stole Annie's heart in 2009 when the plant was a paper topic for an environmental economics class. Her research took her down a life-changing journey. Over the next decade she worked with legislators, researchers, editors and industry stakeholders to help change laws, build markets, and educate the community.
Annie is a published podcaster and writes for Hemp Magazine. She served on the Kentucky Hemp Industries Association Board of Directors and still serves on the Hemp Feed Coalition Steering Committee. Annie earned her Bachelor's of Science in Economics from the University of Kentucky & a Master's in International Environmental Policy and Business Administration from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. You can learn more about Annie and her journey on her blog, Think Hempy Thoughts.

In 2015 Annie founded Friends of Hemp, a 501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission of growing the hemp industry through education and opportunity. FoH initiates projects to build markets through events like hemp foods cook-offs and hemp tap takeovers.
And in 2018, the non-profit partnered with the Hemp Feed Coalition to work towards getting hemp approved as an animal feed for pets & livestock.

Over the last 10 years, Annie has conducted archival research within the Library of Medicine & other government archives to both identify the therapeutic attributes of cannabis and unpack why underlying concerns caused prohibition. Her podcast series, "Anslinger: The Untold Cannabis Conspiracy" uncovers how Harry Anslinger's influence over cannabis policy infects much of society today. You can check it out on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify & more.
In 2017, Annie co-founded Nature's Hemp Oil, a hemp-derived CBD company, as a way to ensure that the CBD she consumed was optimal for her health. On March 1st, 2019, Nature's Hemp Oil became the first of thirteen companies to receive the US Hemp Authority Seal of Certification for safety and legality.

"With things like fiber, the markets need to develop a lot more, there needs to be much more investment into those operations because they're so capital intensive,” Rouse said.

“For the past eighty years we've looked at petrochemicals and synthesized materials to fulfill this market demand, but hemp starts to change that conversation. It's a new opportunity," Rouse said.
"You kind of have to have the financials in place to move forward with the FDA - you submit an application to them then they provide [research study] protocols", Rouse said.
