Does CBD help your immune system? CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the over 110 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids like CBD interact with the endocannabinoid system. Also, the endocannabinoid system plays a role in almost every human system including the immune system. Does CBD help your immune system?
Does CBD Help Your Immune System?
Cannabis has been used as a medicine by civilizations for thousands of years. However, until recently, there hasn’t been very much research on the science of the cannabis and how it interacts with our biological systems. We still have very much to learn and more research needs to be conducted, but we are here to tell you what we know so far.
Moreover, to understand CBD and the immune system, we must first understand the immune system and how it functions. When a person’s immune system is functioning properly, it enables the body to fight of bacteria, viruses, and disease.
How Does CBD Benefit the Immune System?
The immune system is very complex and is compromised of a network of organs, tissues, and cells that all work together to keep us healthy. White blood cells are key to immune system function, and the white blood cell count is a key metric in determining immune system health and functionality. White blood cells operate seek and destroy missions to protect the body and keep our biological systems healthy.
The immune system also plays a role in detecting cells that are malfunctioning in our bodies and stopping the growth of cells that could potentially grow into tumors. So, in addition to protecting cells, the immune system also kills cells to keep our immune systems healthy.
In healthy immune systems, inflammation can be a response to fighting off pathogens and keeping you healthy. However, sometimes immune system dysfunction can cause chronic inflammation in some cases. CBD can be very helpful when looking to help reduce inflammation.
Does CBD help your immune system? We need more research to give a definite answer, but we do know that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in promoting biological balance. So, CBD probably does play some role in the immune system, but we need more scientific studies and research to learn more.
Understanding the Endocannabinoid System and the Immune System
Does CBD help your immune system? Scientists first discovered the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in the 1990s. The ECS helps regulate a number of biological systems in the human body.
There are two main receptors that play a role with the ECS. Those receptors are the CB1 receptor and the CB2 receptor. Moreover, the body produces endogenous endocannabinoids that interact with these receptors. An article on the ECS and the Immune System from Project CBD states, “The ECS is a homeostatic regulator- continually working to maintain a state of biological balance.”
What’s more is that both CB1 and CB2 receptors have both been found on immune cells. This shows a direct link between the endocannabinoid system and the immune system. Does CBD help your immune system? We can’t say for sure, but there is definitely a direct link between the immune system and the endocannabinod system. So, it makes sense that when you consume cannabinoids like CBD that you are directly affecting the immune system, but we don’t have the research yet to say exactly how.
