Is CBD Good For Chronic Pain?
CBD oil has been touted as an anti-inflammatory, with people and brands claiming making major attributes of the compound. Some users of CBD oil have said it helps with anxiety, sleep issues, chronic pain, inflammation and even cancer.
Laura Patty, who has injuries from sports and a car crash, says CBD oil has helped her with chronic pain. When she wakes up in the morning she massages CBD oil salve on the spots in need, and takes a dropper of CBD oil tincture under her tongue.
Laura says, she puts on the CBD oil salve and "can almost instantly just feel how much looser I feel." Prior to trying CBD oil she was taking around 15 pills per day to deal with the pain.
"I wasn't even able to lift my left leg to put it into the bathtub," Laura said. "It wasn't like I was living my life, I felt like I had so much anxiety about everything because I couldn't get everything done because I hurt so bad."
Since Laura started taking CBD oil two years ago, she has moved off the pills. She also says her motivation is back.
"I have hopes, I have goals, I know what I want to do now."
What is CBD?
There are more than 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Both CBD and THC are the primary cannabinoids. However, in the hemp plant, a non-intoxicating variety of the Cannabis sativa species, CBD is the major active cannabinoid, and THC is hardly, if at all, present. This makes hemp-derived CBD oil more available and legal across all 50 states.
How CBD Works
CBD oil effectively supports human health due to its interactions with the body’s endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system regulates homestatic action in the body with its millions of cannabinoid receptors. These receptors are found in the brain and central and peripheral nervous system. These receptors react with both endogenous cannabinoids that are naturally produced in our brain, but also to phytocannabinoids (or plant-based cannabinoids) found and extract from the cannabis plant, like the hemp plant.
When cbd oil and other cannabinoid oils are ingested or absorbed and subsequently processed by the body, the compounds interact with this system which can support regulation or balance in our body.
Is CBD Oil legal?
Some wonder about the legality of CBD oil, as there seems to be lots of conflicting information out there. The truth behind legalities is that it comes down to the source of the CBD oil. This "source rule" determines if it falls outside of the Controlled Substances Act.
Hemp derived products with naturally occurring CBD are legal by authorization from Section 7606 of the 2014 Farm Bill. Conversely, CBD oil products that are produced from marijuana, in states with legal operations are not technically federally legal, similar to how marijuana in those states is also not federally legal.
CBD oil legalities all comes down to the source of the cannabinoids.
Future Legislation for CBD Oil
The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 in the 115th US Congress would clarify CBD oil from hemp's legality even more as it would permanently remove hemp from the federal list of controlled substances. This would be an enormous economic engine for agricultural states like Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, who are all already expanding their hemp program under the 2014 Farm Bill.
In regards to the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee says, "I know we've had a lot of interest in it here in our state, and numbers of people from our ag community I know are interested in it, so thus far I see nothing wrong with it."
Meanwhile, Laura believes CBD oil is an alternative way to better health than taking pills. Laura says, "There's another option besides being miserable every single day, you don't have to be."
